what a shock

michael jackson is dead.
michael jackson was a hero to my childhood: a personal escape with endless hours spent rocking out to my records and dressing up like him with homemade sequined gloves. everyday after preschool, i would run to my friends house to watch "the making of thriller" on vhs, and every day it amazed me. in college, i made a tribute website with a friend. partly in jest, and partly because it was actually cool and terribly amusing at the time.

i made a special request at my wedding to ensure that my dj brought all of michael jacksons earlier albums. i replaced my own records with cassettes, and later cd's, but i still kept the vinyl. and the clothes. i still regularly sing 'human nature' in the shower. i even shamelessly performed (the entire) '"thriller dance" at my cousins wedding last year. as a married old mother-of-two. not an easy task in wedge heels. i am deeply saddened. regardless of what one thinks of his personal life, his talent was undeniable.

the king of pop is dead!

and furthermore...

last night adam and i were talking about the celebrities that used to appear on "the new scooby doo movies" that ran (and re-ran) throughout the early seventies and eighties. among jonathan winters and sandy duncan, i also remember phyllis diller, the harlem globetrotters and don knotts making regular appearances. adam recalled the three stooges and adam west, and was insisting that there was black comedian who also regularly appeared as well, though i cannot figure out who this may have been. and i think there was an episode or two with the monkees.

anyway, can anyone add to the list?

and here's a little trivia for you: casey kasem was the voice of shaggy.

get a clue!

so perhaps this is totally old news, but adam was flipping through channels the other day and stumbled upon the new scooby doo get a clue show which i was previously boycotting because it was not the original scooby doo that i had grown up with.

so what has changed? well everything. and that alone is disappointing. however, i remember watching episodes with special guests like jonathan winters and sandy duncan and thinking, "who the heck are they?" at the time, i only knew sandy duncan from a 1980 broadway production of peter pan. my sister and i would stare at the cartoon to see if we could see her glass eye. we never could. that was disappointing, too.

but think about it- like the muppets and every other show that we watched as children, there was an entire secret dialog for our parents. jokes that we thought were so funny, but that went completely over our heads. and then i realized that my parents were laughing. they not only understood the jokes and innuendo, but i thought, perhaps these shows were really for them. no. that would be crazy.

so... on the new scooby doo, the token bad guy (dr phinius phibes) has two side kicks geared toward our generation... none other than napoleon and kip dynamite. i was stunned that my fat lard (JK!) of a neighbor, tina (who watches a ton of cartoons that we do not because we can not afford >boomerang<) had not alerted me to this fascinating discovery.

now please excuse me. my lips need moisturizing real bad.

celebrity babies

tegan, like most babies, has gone through the many phases of looking like various celebrities. first, he looked like harold and the purple crayon, next it was ed asner and (according to nate) fesek. currently he's evolving into alex p. keaton. polo shirt and all. (or is it brian bonsall? you decide. it's all the same show anyway!)
