do an 'interests' search for either ana or mia on livejournal. you will be completely horrified to find hundreds and hundreds of pro-eating disorder weblogs by teen and pre-teen girls who give fashionable names (ana & mia) to their life-threatening diseases of anorexia and bulimia. these are not support groups, but rather barfing and starving tips and "thinspiration" photos of models and celebrities. i have a close friend with anorexia, but she is still quite proud of herself and her weight-loss. i've tried talking to her, but she takes "you look disgusting" as a compliment and assumes that i'm "jealous" because i'm "in the normal range." last i checked, normal was the range to be in.
i hate this kind of stuff. it scares me so much how little parents can know about their children.

I saw something about this on 20/20 a couple years back.
Frankly, I find these "support groups" incredibly disgusting and don't know why people would subject themselves to such acts (okay, actually, I do know, but you get the idea).
I want to start a pro-eating blog for fat people. I mean, there's got to be a niche market for something like that, dontcha think?
get right on that, jeremy. what would you call it? the 'ulite club? :P
actually, my baby nephew is the funniest little eater. he loves to eat and his parents have to stop him midway and make him chew and drink. haha. i call him a 'non-purging bullimic', perhaps that would be a good name.
seriously though... look, i was a dancer until i was 15. i totally understand the deal. basically, like in everything else, 'fat girls don't get the part' if you read through dance manuals, the 'ideal body' is 5'6 and about 95 pounds. that is a bmi of 15 or severly anorexic.
do you all know how to calculate your bmi (body mass index)? if not go to: http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
scary. jj, i thought you'd be particularly interested with the age-group that you teach. it's just that you can't say, 'oh this one is rail thin (like nicole ritchie, etc.) so she has the eating disorder... it's the ones that are 125lbs and more... the 'normal' ones.
ky and i are going to share some ben & jerry's for breakfast and shake what our mama's gave us and not puke it up.
I crave to be an anorexic skeleton. How am I supposed to score 15 years younger toyboys with a triple chin, love handles, spaniel ears, bingo wings and tree trunks?
